pahoehoe lava

GLOSSARY OF VOLCANIC TERMS
A Hawaiian term to describe lava flows with smooth, continuous surfaces (Kilburn, 2000, p. 291). Pahoehoe flows may have a variety of surfaces described as smooth, ropy (characterized by rope-like, commonly braided flow folds on the lava flow's surface) , or shelly (vesicular and cavernous; Cas and Wright, 1987, p. 66-67). Pahoehoe toes and lobes form when largely degassed mafic magma issues from tubes relatively far from the erupting vent.
